Colorful Commutes

I’ve always loved the way the MTA Arts & Design Program turns subway stations into small moments of wonder. One of the brightest examples is Felipe Galindo’s "Magic Realism in Kingsbridge" at the 231st Street station in the Bronx, where everyday neighborhood scenes become surreal, humorous windows into an enchanted version of the Bronx. My absolute favorite is the scene of a unicorn picking up trash during a community clean-up while a pair of children play with the sun!
That spirit of playful transformation is at the heart of Colorful Commutes. In this activity, makers design their own window art for the station. The key to drawing stained glass is to simplify your scene into bold shapes and strong dark outlines, almost like a mosaic. Then choose glowing colors like markers, highlighters, and anything bright to mimic the way real glass catches the light.

Look through the Community Gallery to see how friends, family, and fellow makers interpreted this fun temple with their own creative lens!
